Ballast McGee is a side character in Thrilling Intent. He first appeared during the Romance of the Four Clans arc, and has appeared in various arcs thereafter, and even the intro theme animation.

History[]

Romance of the Four Clans[]

The Gods Are Gone[]

Everything Is On Fire[]

BIG WAR[]

The Calm[]

Ballast McGee appeared before Gregor, Ashe and Astra on New Frontier, looking for Markus after having sworn revenge. After being questioned why he was on the island, he explains that there was an open invitation to mercenaries. Gregor, Ashe and Astra had previously turned away mercenaries wanting to tag along with them, and apparently Ballast McGee several times, but he had continued to insist.

After answering a couple more questions, the group tried to trick him away by exclaiming that they saw various things off in the distance. As it did not help, they instead told him to not move from the spot, to which he did, waiting to hear what he was supposed to be looking

Later in the arc, he manages to find Markus, and tells him, after some sidetracking in their conversation, that the other group is in trouble. He also tells Markus and Thog of a faster way to where the other group is rather than climbing up onto the volcano - through a portal in Ballast's potato sack, which the two climbs through.

Personality[]

Mild-mannered and smooth as an oil slick, Ballast McGee handles most situations with a laid back attitude. He has not shown any extreme emotions yet, even when confronting Markus for the first time.

Ballast McGee has shown a deep understanding of Markus' personality on multiple occasions, as when Ballast covered himself in Markus' literary works, preventing the Tiefling from being able to attack.

He tends to refer to everyone, regardless of gender, as a "girl". Whether it is done intentionally or not is up for debate. However, he has mentioned that the way he uses it is as a generalized statement to the universe. In the one case he referred to someone as a "guy" he struggled, taking several (painful looking) attempts to get it out.

Abilities[]

Farce[]

Inherited from his dead brother, Ballast McGee has access to the card Farce (Subtext: I am a living Joke), which allows him to alter reality in small but significant ways. The change is limited to one letter (for example, changing the "s" in "sack" to a "b" and making "back" instead, creating a portal). Though it was very powerful in the hands of his brother, the card is hampered by Ballast McGee's exceedingly limited imagination.

Relationships[]

Markus Velafi[]

He seems to enjoy annoying him, even going as far as to copy one of Markus' books.

Ballast McGee holds a grudge against Markus for killing his brother (the antagonist during the Deck of Disaster). Ballast, who was already a writer at the time, admitted to Markus that he was able to easily change his typical writing style to more suit a nautical novel.

Ashe[]

She has told Ballast that she is a fan and enjoys his books because of how simple they are, especially for someone who has difficulty reading Free.

This appears to have struck a chord with Ballast, as when he sees that she might be in trouble afterwards, he goes out of his way to find Markus, temporarily dropping his revenge plot, so that help could be gotten to her immediately.

Trivia[]

  • He appeared in the Tomb of Horrors challenge livestream that Third Wheel members Matt and Jay guested on as part of Team B. His class there was a Summoner. He summoned Markus Jr. as an Eidolon.
    • This livestream was later confirmed as canon during The Calm, where Ballast mentioned traveling with a group of other adventurers, matching those of his partners during the Tomb of Horrors.
  • He is the brother of the main antagonist of the Deck of Disasters arc.
  • During episode 201, in celebration of over 200 episodes, (mostly) Ballast McGee was drawn full-screen artwork by Jackson, along with a slight focus on him during the latter half of the episode.
  • In episode 207, he reveals that he has an entirely worthless metal tooth made out of "Bropper", which is an alloy of his own creation that is made from mixing the least valuable metals he could get his hands on (presumably Brass/Bronze and Copper).
